Trustworthiness in American Politics

As Election Day in American politics draws ever so near, both candidates running for the office of the president are stepping up their efforts to try to sway voters to choose them over the other. One of the most pressing issues right now is which of these candidates can you really trust to lead the US out of its current economic crisis as well as keep the US in good standing with the rest of the world? All in all the issue of trust is what this election will boil down to in the end.

Both President Obama and presidential hopeful Mitt Romney have accused one another of not being completely honest with American voters. Whether the issue is Mitt Romney’s tax returns or the more recent debate on the cost of Medicare, both candidates have been extremely vocal about the other party’s lack of honesty. Most Americans joke about the inability to trust politicians as a whole but when it comes down to choosing the President of the United States a politician’s honesty is no laughing matter.

The Debate Over Gun Control Policies in America

            There has been a recent public outcry for stronger debates on gun control policies brought on by the increasing tragedies of gun related violence in America.  Since the tragic shooting of Trayvon Martin many states’ firearm policies, such as those in Florida, have come under fire for allowing such an incident to take place.  The advocates of stronger gun control laws feel that had there been a tighter grip on handguns in Florida this incident and many others like it all across the country may have been prevented. Opponents argue that in order to prevent incidents like this from taking place in the future,  gun control laws must be even more lax so that more people will have the ability to posses firearms, concealed or not.

           

So the question we are faced with is simple:

Mountaintop Removal

I gazed out my window upon what was once my refuge from the world, my sanctuary, my mountain. A mountain it is no longer... no, now it is comparable to the most desolate and alien of planets in our small section of the universe. They stripped away the layers of my land in order to burn the ancient coal within.  Imagine if you had a natural sanctuary, a place of profound and magnificent beauty so spectacular that all who happened to know of it thought of it as a little piece of their heaven.  Now, imagine that one day you went to visit your refuge only to find the government had leased the land to an out of state coal company.  A company that did not see your heaven for what it was.  A company whose sole purpose was profiteering from the absolute destruction of the ecosystem in order to provide an outdated fuel to outdated power supply companies.

The immense quagmire of tax code in the United States is filled with language used to stump the average reader and prevent those who are not educated in the prose from deciphering the innumerable loopholes through various deductions and write-offs that are held within.  For years, the Big Business lobbyists have pushed their bills through the legislative branch of the government in order to create their corporate utopia:  A virtually tax-free realm of business designed to increase profit margins and line the pockets of corporate CEOs and their partners.  It costs an enormous amount of money to hire those individuals who are skilled in discovering the massive loopholes and therefore the average American is relegated to paying the highest taxes on the lowest incomes while the wealthy pay the absolute lowest taxes on the highest incomes that this country has ever seen.

Like most citizens, I have always thought of America as being the greatest nation on earth. This sense of patriotism gives me a feeling of pride and duty for my country.
